What They Do

Vesta are increasing the oceans capacity to store CO₂ at the same time as protecting vulnerable coastlines. Vesta’s carbon removing sand contains finely ground olivine - a silicate mineral that is ubiquitous in the Earth’s upper mantle. Olivine naturally reacts with CO₂ as it weathers, but this reaction can be accelerated by finely crushing it and with the support of wave power, The sand plays three roles, protecting coasts from erosion, reducing the acidity of the ocean - and increasing its ability to absorb atmospheric CO₂

Why It Matters

Spreading crushed rocks seems like a simple and elegant solution to remove CO₂. However, understanding the full dynamics of carbon drawdown and sequestration, creating responsible deployment parameters, and building stakeholder engagement are no small tasks. Vesta is focused on unlocking this pathway at massive scale.
